For pioneers, we are making books and we made them look old. The books are about our six-month trip to Oregon. Taylor
In music, we are making paper bag puppets for our pioneer families for our pioneer plays. We wrote a script about something that might have happened along the Oregon Trail. We had four choices for songs. We are turning the songs into another song with the same beat. We are making up our own words to the song. Cooper, Colby and Ethan N. In art, we covered our bottle pets and we covered them in wet plaster. The bottles will become bottle pets that we will paint and then we will make them look like statues. Ryan and Jared In reading, we finished The Bridge which is a story about a girl whose bridge is broken. Naomi In reading, we finished The Grand Escape and we are starting The Trumpet of the Swan. Kiley In science, we learned that with levers use effort to move a loard

In art, we are making bottle pets out of bottles and we are putting plaster bandages dipped in water around them and we are going to paint them. Naomi
On Monday, we got a new student. Her name is Alyssa. She's really nice. She has pet ferrets. We got Alyssa when a student, Makayla, left our school. We all made cards for her and she was nice and surprised. Morgan In reading, we are reading White Bird, School Mouse and Shoeshine Girl. Heather Today in pioneer life, in one of our last pioneer diary entries we are writing about reaching Oregon. Kiley On Monday, it was Jared's half birthday. We had cupcakes. Breanna In science, we are learning about simple machines. We are learning that simple machines use force to move things and we learned that using a simple machine makes work and life easier. We made butter by shaking heavy cream in a glass tube and Mr. Poznar used a mixer, and we learned that a mixer can make butter faster than just shaking. When you can't lift something up, when you make an inclined plane, it makes lifting things much easier. We tried this by putting wood slanting against the chair and pushed and pulled the book up the inclined plane. A lot of people!! Yesterday, we started finishing up our informational texts. Cooper Yesterday in music we played a game where we had to name all the instrument families. Ryan We had frustration with reflex math, but we are working on it. Alyssa Today, Makayla is moving to Madison. We made cards for her and threw a goodbye party and WE ARE ALL GOING TO MISS HER. EVERYBODY
We just got finished with simple machines in science and we are studying the law of motion. Colby We are studying how far a marble can go when you push it. Tryston This week on the Oregon Trail some Indians came into camp and most of us were scared and we communicated with them and found out all they wanted to do was trade and we traded with them and they were happy and we said we will never be scared of Indians again! Naomi We started fractions in math this week. Xander In the Time for Kids, we realized that gorillas are getting extinct very quickly. People are killing them because of the war and the poachers are trying to shoot the rangers and the gorillas. Cooper and Ethan N.
In art, we have not quite finished our monsters yet. In a few weeks, we will get to glaze our monsters. Mrs. Houze needs to leave them out to harden and she is going to put them in a kiln for 24 hours, then we can paint them. Jared and Breanna In social studies, we made groups of families to go on the Oregon Trail. We've learned that it could be dangerous and we get to write diaries about it. We watched videos about pioneers and we learned if their wagons got too crowded, they needed to throw things out. If you had too much stuff in your wagon, you couldn't get to where you wanted to go. Your animal could die of exhaustion. Colby, Heather, Eliot, Tryston, Ethan N. We were learning about main idea and supporting details and we had a test on what we learned about the last few weeks and we read a book called A River Ran Wild and learned about problem and solution. Naomi On Tuesday we went to Colgate to learn about Martin Luther King's speech and we heard his speech. Heather
We brought papers that said parts of the speech that Martin Luther King said. Taylor When we watched the video, Martin Luther King's voice was like a preacher. Colby His dream was to hope his daughters and sons could join hands with white boys and girls and be friends. Cooper Martin Luther King had a dream that all the people in the world would join hands. Tryston and Kiley In art, we are trying to make our clay monsters and we can add anything we want as long as it's fat where it is hooked on and we had to smooth them and clay kind of feels weird. Makayla In writing, we went to the computer lab to type down our information writing. Taylor We started reading about non-fiction books and some of the books we read were about pandas and Martin Luther King. Taylor
We've been practicing our 3s multiplication facts. Heather We've been learning about Martin Luther King and his dream speech. Ethan N. Martin Luther's speech helped changed the laws about segregation and the whole nation was out from segregation. Jared We are learning about people from the past. Tryston Fiona moved to Scotland this week. Colby In art class we are using clay and we are making monsters out of clay and we can add anything we want to them and they have to go through a fire to dry. Makayla We are learning that Martin Luther King helped stop segregation. Breanna We learned about pandas and what happened to them and mostly they eat bamboo and they also can act like humans. Cooper We were learning about pandas to find the topic, the main idea and the supporting details in reading. Colby In orchestra, we are doing a really (2-page) long piece of music and there are some really hard notes and some of the music is divided so that it looks like we are playing two notes at a time. Jared We learned about the revolutionary war and we read books about the Boston Tea Party and the Boston Massacre. Xander We learned that Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. Kiley In chorus we are learning a new song called "Blow, Bugle, Blow." And the altos and the sopranos have an echo song. Morgan We've been learning about the Colonial days and the Declaration of Independence. Ethan N.
Paul Revere warned the colonists that the British were coming. Colby The colonists won the war and the king said to pay taxes and they didn't so he sent British soldiers to the new world. Xander The lobsterbacks went to get the weapons but the colonists hid the weapons to keep them safe. Tryston During the war, the colonists decided to fight for both a new country and to stop taxes. Eliot We did a party for Fiona because she is going to Scotland and she is coming back June 15 and we'll all miss her. Fiona's going to be in fourth grade and fourth grade means third grade. Makayla Fiona' leaving January 15 and she's flying 13 hours to Scotland. Kiley We were reading Detective Dog. We answered questions about detective dog. A mouse stole his bone from The Real Thief. We tried to restate the questions and we learned that some answers to some questions are not answered using direct evidence, they are inferred. We used evidence from the story to support our answers. Heather, Breanna, Makayla, Colby, Morgan and Eliot
We've been studying about sounds. Sounds comes from vibrations. The difference between volume and pitch is pitch is how high a sound is, and volume is how loud something is. We learned about how a sound wave moves. We learned that sometimes you can see the things vibrating but sometimes they are so fast or so small you can't see them. We did some experiments and everyone in the class loved it, well mostly everyone in the class did, and we also wrote down what we learned about the stations. We learned that sound moves when atoms hit each other. The louder the volume the more energy is used to make the sound. And we watched a video about sound. We learned that sound travels faster through rock than air because there are more atoms in rock than air and the atoms hit each other and sound goes faster. Phew!!!! Taylor, Ethan N., Morgan, Colby, Tryston, Eliot, Naomi, Makayla and Jared Our old gym teacher came to visit from her new job. She graduated from state trooper school. Morgan and Fiona We just watched a video about a kid who was watching the news and he saw that people in Syracuse were homeless and they were getting frostbite and he started a blanket drive and on the first year he got 281 blankets. Then he got 800 in total. After that he was speechless!!!!!! Jared, Tryston and Makayla We have been studying Native Americans. We learned that the Plains Native Americans used every part of the buffalo. They were not wasters. Different places around North America had different homes because of the natural resources around them. They took buffalo skulls and faced them toward the sun to honor the buffalo spirit. The Native Americans used buffalo skins for clothes. Taylor, Tryston, Naomi, Morgan, Breanna and Colby
Mr .Shenkel is getting married on Sunday and we made a big cake for him on paper. We learned that even if something is slowing you down, you should never give up. He's a kind and nice and funny guy. Makayla This year the school is doing something called Toys for Tots. It's when students bring in a new unwrapped toy and put it in a big box and the Marine Corps brings those toys to a factory and wraps them and gives them to children in need, and we get to go shopping with them. Sergeant Jones, a teacher at HCS, came and talked to us about it. We learned to help children in need and make them feel good and get something for Christmas. We also made trains and they are in a big area in school. Morgan, Ethan N. and Makayla At the concert, Mr. Ellis messed up on purpose about three or four times. We were working on doing cause and effect in reading. We learned that cause is something that happened and effect is what happened because of the cause. Ethan N., Makayla and Colby
In math, we are studying measurements and we measured the classroom by yardsticks. We learned how long the classroom is. We measured ours and our partners' feet and we found out that a boy has the biggest feet. We noticed that we all got different room lengths because we were all in different places. Jared and Morgan We have academic choice time every now and then. We can do anything that helps you learn, like work on math, you can write a story, or read. Xander and Naomi We had a communities test. Ethan H. Today we started readers theater and we are going to perform them Thursday. In readers theater we have three different groups that do three different plays. One group has two short plays. Fiona, Morgan and Makayla We studied about r communities by playing Jeopardy.
